President John Dramani Mahama has clarified the rationale behind his administration’s decision to omit the Ministry of Information from its list of 23 ministries. He described the move as a strategic measure to streamline government operations, reduce redundancies, and fulfill his promise to downsize the government.
The decision has sparked discussions, with the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) seeking explanations for the structural adjustment. Addressing the concerns at a press event, President Mahama emphasized that the choice was deliberate and aimed at enhancing efficiency in government communication.
He disclosed that, instead of maintaining a standalone Information Ministry, a Minister of State responsible for government communications was appointed directly under the presidency. This arrangement was supported by a team of skilled communication experts stationed in key sectors to ensure effective information dissemination.
“We had to rethink how information flows from the government to the public. By integrating this role into the presidency and anchoring it with competent professionals, we’ve ensured that communication is not only efficient but also aligned with the overall strategy to reduce the size of government,” President Mahama stated.
The former president underscored the importance of strategic communication in achieving the administration’s objectives and maintaining transparency.
