The People’s National Party (PNP) has expressed grave concerns over President John Dramani Mahama’s recent government appointments, citing a blatant disregard for constitutional mandates on gender equality.

In a strongly-worded petition addressed to prominent religious bodies, including the Christian Council, the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, the Catholic Bishops, and the Muslim community, the PNP accused President Mahama of reneging on his campaign promise to implement the Affirmative Action Law (AAL) and ensure a 30% minimum representation of women in government appointments.
The PNP pointed out that President Mahama’s appointments have overwhelmingly favored men, with women comprising only:
- 16% of ministers
- 14% of deputy ministers
- 10% of cabinet ministers
This, the PNP argued, is in clear contravention of Article 17(4) of the 1992 Constitution and the Affirmative Action Act of 2024.

The PNP urges religious leaders to publicly condemn President Mahama’s actions and demand compliance with Ghana’s laws, emphasizing that the country’s religious institutions have a moral obligation to promote justice and equality.
The PNP hopes to spark a national conversation on gender inequality in leadership and push for a more inclusive and representative government.
