Background
The incident occurred on January 18, 2025, when illegal miners allegedly breached a security fence at an abandoned concession of the AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine. This led to a confrontation with military personnel, resulting in the deaths of at least seven miners and injuries to others. The Ghana Armed Forces reported that approximately 60 armed illegal miners attempted to access the mine, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
In response to the incident, President John Dramani Mahama has called for a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the clash. He expressed deep regret over the loss of life and has urged AngloGold Ashanti to cover the medical and burial expenses of the victims.
The National Peace Council has also condemned the violence, describing the deaths as “regrettable and unacceptable.” They have called for calm and urged the security services to expedite investigations into the matter.
Engagements between the government, AngloGold Ashanti, and other stakeholders are ongoing to foster peaceful coexistence between the company and the local community.
