The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has paid GH¢382.85 million in claims to healthcare providers across the country for services provided to National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) members in September.
The latest payment brings the Authority’s cumulative claims payments for the year to GH¢2.115 billion.
Public healthcare facilities received the largest share of the September disbursement, with GH¢197.32 million, representing 51.54 per cent of the total.
Private healthcare facilities received GH¢128.95 million, representing 33.68 per cent, while mission facilities received GH¢56.58 million, accounting for 14.78 per cent.
In a statement issued by its Corporate Affairs Directorate on Tuesday, October 6, NHIA Chief Executive Officer Dr Victor Asare Bampoe said timely reimbursement was critical to maintaining healthcare providers’ confidence and ensuring uninterrupted service delivery to NHIS members.

“Prompt claims payment remains central to the Authority’s operational reforms, and the objective is to prevent co-payment at the point of care,” he said.
Dr Bampoe said prompt payment of claims should also discourage healthcare facilities from charging NHIS members for services already covered under the Scheme.
He said the NHIA’s priority was to ensure that NHIS members could access healthcare without facing financial barriers at the point of care.

As part of efforts to support healthcare providers, the NHIA increased service tariffs by 50 per cent in August. Dr Bampoe said the adjustment was intended to cushion providers and strengthen efforts to remove financial barriers to healthcare access.
The Authority said timely settlement of claims remained a key part of its operational reforms and efforts to improve healthcare delivery and expand access to essential health services nationwide.
