Tolon witnessed rising tensions on Tuesday when some youth, said to be aligned with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), forcibly locked up the District Youth Employment Agency (YEA) office. Their action was in protest against what they described as unfair and partisan recruitment into the Community Police Assistance program.
According to the group, the recruitment exercise was conducted in a manner that deliberately favored individuals associated with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), sidelining other qualified young people from the community. They accused the local YEA office of manipulating the process to advance political interests rather than providing equal opportunities for all.
The protest has effectively disrupted the normal operations of the agency in Tolon, as the District Director and staff have been unable to access their offices. This has left ongoing administrative work and services at a standstill, raising concerns among residents who depend on the agency for employment opportunities.
The aggrieved youth vowed to maintain their stance until authorities address what they consider to be a biased and exclusionary recruitment process. They further called on national leaders of YEA to intervene and ensure fairness and transparency in the program.
As of now, officials of the YEA are yet to issue an official response to the accusations. Meanwhile, security concerns are mounting in the district as tensions continue to simmer over the matter.
