Nana Agyei Writes – United We Grow: Why collective support for government is key to Ghana’s economic success

As Ghanaians, we stand at a critical juncture in our nation’s history. The path to economic growth and a better Ghana requires collective support for our governments, transcending political affiliations. It’s time for us to put aside our differences and work towards a common goal.

The recent economic recovery is a testament to the previous NPP government’s efforts, with Ghana achieving a remarkable 5.8% GDP growth in the first half of 2024. This growth is a result of its macroeconomic stability and growth interventions, including the IMF-supported Post-COVID-19 Programme for Economic Growth (PC-PEG). However, sustaining this growth requires a united front.

We must recognize that economic growth is not a partisan issue. It’s a national imperative that demands collective effort and support. By working together, we can create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, jobs to be created, and incomes to rise.

The current Mahama government is already taking steps to promote economic growth, including the implementation of its 24-hour Economy policy and a GH¢13.85 billion ‘Big Push’ Programme, which aims to drive economic transformation by funding large-scale infrastructure projects across the country and creating jobs for Ghanaians. However, the success of these initiatives depends on our collective support.

We must also acknowledge the challenges that lie ahead, including the need to address our debt burden, improve our revenue mobilization, and enhance our economic competitiveness. These challenges require a concerted effort from all stakeholders, including the government, private sector, civil society, and individuals.

As citizens, we have a critical role to play in supporting the government’s efforts. We must hold our leaders accountable for their actions, provide constructive feedback, and participate in the decision-making process. We must also be willing to make sacrifices and contribute to the national effort.

In conclusion, the need for collective support for our governments to drive economic growth and ensure a better Ghana cannot be overstated. Let us put aside our political differences and work towards a common goal. Together, we can build a prosperous and resilient economy that benefits all Ghanaians.
