As a concerned Ghanaian citizen and a journalist, I am appalled and disgusted by UTV’s decision to air a “live sex” show on national television. This egregious error in judgment is a blatant betrayal of the public trust and a slap in the face to our collective moral values.
Our media outlets have a sacred responsibility to promote and uphold the standards of decency and respect that are integral to our society. UTV’s actions are a stark reminder that some media houses are more interested in chasing ratings and profits than in serving the public interest.
Regardless of its schedule, the implications of this broadcast are far-reaching and disturbing. What message does this send to our children and young people about what is acceptable and respectable? How can we expect to build a moral and upright society when our media outlets are peddling explicit content?

According to my sources, the broadcast was aired during a late-night program, but per my checks, many viewers have expressed outrage and disappointment, stating that the content was not suitable for public consumption.
I have spoken to several media experts, who have expressed concern about the lack of regulation and oversight in the media industry. This incident, therefore, highlights the need for stricter regulations and enforcement.
In light of this, I urge the National Media Commission as a regulatory body, and stakeholders to take decisive action against media outlets that air explicit or harmful content. The NMC should enforce stricter guidelines and sanctions against non-compliant media outlets.
This includes imposing fines, revoking licenses, or other measures necessary to ensure that media content aligns with our national standards and values.

It’s crucial that we hold these stations accountable for promoting content that undermines our societal values and poses a threat to our collective well-being.
To UTV, I say, you have failed in your duty to the Ghanaian people. You have compromised our values and insulted our intelligence. It is time for you to take responsibility for your actions and to make amends.
To my fellow Ghanaians, I urge you to join me in condemning this shameful act. Let us stand together and demand better from our media outlets. We deserve nothing less.
As a journalist, I urge all media practitioners to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and respect for our audience.
