Minority demands cocoa price increase, proposes GH¢7,400 per bag

By Gordon Desmond Sackitey

The Minority Caucus in Parliament is urging the government to fulfill its promise to increase the producer price of cocoa.

Led by Isaac Yaw Opoku, Member of Parliament for Offinso South, the caucus argues that cocoa farmers are being shortchanged, citing that they’re entitled to 2/3rds of the world price, exceeding $11,000 per ton, with the government promising to pay farmers 70 percent of the world market price.

The caucus emphasizes that the government’s current price falls significantly short of the global market value.
They accuse the government of failing to uphold its promise to pay farmers at least 70% of the international market price.

The Minority Caucus is requesting the government to immediately pay farmers the promised 70% of the world market price.
They also plan to summon the Minister for Agriculture before Parliament to address the issue, which they term “broad daylight robbery” against cocoa farmers.
