Kwabena Agyepong Declares 2026 Bid, Says He’s NPP’s Best Hope for 2028

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has officially declared his intention to contest in the party’s 2026 presidential primaries.

His announcement came just hours after the party opened nominations on Tuesday, July 29, to begin the search for a new flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Speaking at a short declaration event, Agyepong presented himself as the unifier the NPP needs to regain strength and win power in 2028. He said his leadership offers the best path forward for the party, promising unity and integrity.

He urged delegates to resist inducements and avoid endorsing candidates based on money. He warned against the rising trend of monetisation in internal contests.

“Politics belongs to the grassroots, to ordinary people—not a power struggle among elite party figures. Let’s not drag the party through divisions and endless reconciliation. With me, KAA, the NPP can unite and win. We need clean hands, a clear mind, and a compassionate heart to lead. I, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, am ready to work with you all—to rebuild and restore hope for our party and for Ghana,” he said.

Agyepong also appealed to former NPP presidential hopeful Alan Kyerematen to return to the party, stressing that the NPP was built on sacrifice, not privilege.

The event saw the attendance of some former NPP lawmakers, including Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye.

Meanwhile, General Secretary of the party, Justin Kodua Frimpong, has announced that nominations will close on August 28. The presidential primaries will take place on January 31, 2026. Interested aspirants are to pay a non-refundable fee of GHS100,000.

Kodua also used the occasion to caution the opposition NDC against politicising the Bawku chieftaincy crisis. He condemned previous attempts to associate the NPP with the conflict during the 2024 elections campaign.
