Health Experts Call for Prioritization of Preconception Care to Reduce Maternal Mortality

Health experts are urging greater attention to preconception care as part of efforts to reduce maternal mortality in Ghana.

According to them, providing medical guidance and health interventions for women before conception can help identify and manage risk factors early, thereby preventing complications during pregnancy and childbirth.

Preconception care includes nutritional counseling, screening for underlying conditions, promoting healthy lifestyles, and ensuring that women are physically and mentally prepared for pregnancy.

The experts emphasized that prioritizing this aspect of maternal healthcare would not only save lives but also contribute to healthier families and communities.

They further called on government, health institutions, and stakeholders to integrate preconception care into national health strategies to help meet Ghana’s maternal health targets.
