Government Statistician Recommends Inflation Relief Measures

As inflation continues to ease, the Government Statistician, Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu, has outlined targeted recommendations for households, businesses, and government to mitigate its lingering effects.
Speaking at the release of the July Consumer Price Index and inflation report, Dr. Iddrisu advised households to adopt smart cost-saving practices.

“Households should lean into bulk purchases of staples to reduce costs and adopt energy-saving habits like using power-efficient bulbs, unplugging idle appliances, and scheduling cooking or ironing during off-peak hours,” he said.

To businesses, he recommended a shift in operations that prioritize efficiency and adaptability.

“Shift to locally sourced materials where viable and simplify product lines to focus on high-demand items. This will help avoid unnecessary inventory exposure during inflationary periods,” he advised.

For government, Dr. Iddrisu stressed the importance of data-driven interventions, especially in inflation-prone regions such as the Upper West.

“We need to undertake serious research and price monitoring in high-inflation areas to inform targeted policy interventions,” he stated.

In the short term, he called for regional adjustments in social protection programmes to bridge disparities.

“Tailor initiatives like the LEAP support, NHIS outreach, and school feeding programme to reflect the economic realities of different regions,” Dr. Iddrisu added.
