FDA Suspends Production of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix Over Safety Concerns

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has announced the immediate suspension of the manufacture of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix, following serious health and safety concerns uncovered during recent investigations.

This action comes after the FDA had earlier ordered a market recall of all canned Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix products, as well as specific batches of the 380g and 1.05kg pouches, due to reported consumer complaints.

An inspection of the Nutrifoods Ghana Limited manufacturing facility revealed multiple infractions, including poor maintenance of critical production equipment and inadequate monitoring systems necessary to ensure public safety.

According to the FDA, the lapses led to a compromise in product integrity, especially in sealing mechanisms. This failure resulted in product contamination, bloating, and in some cases, visible mold, prompting a health risk and the subsequent suspension of production.

In a further development, the Authority has launched internal investigations to determine whether there were any regulatory lapses on its part, particularly in light of the fact that Nutrifoods had already been barred from producing the product in January 2025. The FDA says any internal failures identified will be addressed swiftly to reinforce its regulatory systems.

Consumers, retailers, and wholesalers have been urged to take note of the suspension and comply with the product recall directive.

The FDA reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability, and public safety, assuring Ghanaians of continued strict oversight in line with its mandate.

For more information, individuals are advised to contact the FDA directly via its official communication channels.
