The Electoral Commission of Ghana has issued a warning to the public regarding a misleading video circulating on social media. The video falsely claims that EC-branded bags containing ballot papers are filled with dollars being smuggled by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
However, the Commission has clarified that the bags actually contained ballot papers meant for destruction due to serialization issues.
According to the Electoral Commission, the destruction of ballot papers for the Ahafo and Volta regions was announced ahead of the 2024 General Election.
The exercise was carried out by Zoomlion under the Commission’s supervision, and the media was invited to cover the event.
“In the spirit of transparency that characterizes the Commission’s operations, the media were invited tocover the destruction,” the Commission noted.
The EC said certificates of destruction and the original video are available to prove that the claims made in the misleading video are false.
