EC sets September 2 for Akwatia by-election

The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially announced Tuesday, September 2, 2025, as the date for the by-election in the Akwatia Constituency following the passing of its Member of Parliament, Hon. Ernest Kumi.

In a press release signed by EC Chairperson Mrs. Jean Mensa, the Commission stated, “following the unfortunate death of the Member of Parliament for the Akwatia Constituency, Hon. Ernest Kumi, the seat of the Constituency in Parliament has become vacant.

In accordance with Article 112 (5) of the Constitution, as amended, the Electoral Commission will hold a By-Election in the Constituency on Tuesday, 2nd September, 2025.”

Nomination of prospective parliamentary candidates will be received at the Denkyembour District Office of the EC between Monday, August 11, and Wednesday, August 13, 2025, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm daily.

Interested aspirants are expected to download their nomination forms from the EC’s website from July 30 to August 13. Forms must be endorsed by a proposer and a seconder, as well as eighteen other registered voters from the constituency.

Candidates are required to submit two recent passport-sized photographs and pay a filing fee of GHC10,000. However, female candidates and persons with disabilities (PWDs) will pay a reduced fee of GHC7,500.

The Commission urged the public and stakeholders to take note of the timelines and procedures outlined for a smooth and peaceful electoral process.
