Drunk Man Dies After Being Run Over on Kormantse Highway

A man believed to be in his late 50s has died after being run over by a vehicle while crossing the Mankessim–Cape Coast highway near Kormantse in the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region.

Eyewitnesses identified the victim as Kobina Ebo from Abandze and said he appeared heavily intoxicated, wandering aimlessly in the middle of the road. He was struck by a Stanbic-branded vehicle with registration number GW-1745-16, which was traveling from Takoradi to Accra.

According to witnesses, the driver attempted to swerve to avoid Kobina, but the victim staggered into the vehicle’s path and was hit. The impact left him with broken legs and severe injuries. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Saltpond Government Hospital, where his body has been deposited at the mortuary for autopsy.

Hon. Gideon Okyere, Assemblyman for Upper Kormantse, confirmed that Kobina was returning home from town when the tragic incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 12, 2026. He described the location as an accident-prone stretch of road where speeding drivers have previously claimed several lives, including schoolchildren.

Okyere reiterated the community’s appeal for the construction of speed ramps to curb frequent accidents and urged both motorists and pedestrians to exercise extra caution on highways, especially in the Kormantse area.

Meanwhile, the Saltpond Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
