Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George Rebukes DStv Ghana Over Pricing, Calls for Real Reduction

Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has responded sharply to a recent statement by DStv Ghana, accusing the pay-TV operator of failing to take Ghanaians seriously and reiterating his call for an immediate reduction in subscription prices.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Minister said DStv’s remarks vindicate his earlier position that the company is unwilling to offer fair pricing to Ghanaian consumers.

“The same group operating in Nigeria reversed their price increases when challenged by the Nigerian authorities. They complied after the Nigerian House of Representatives intervened. Why not Ghana?” he questioned.

Citing economic indicators, the Minister noted that in April 2025, when the cedi had appreciated by approximately 10%, inflation had dropped by over 5%, and fuel prices had declined, DStv instead raised its subscription fees by 15%.

He also revealed a proposal made by DStv during private consultations, which he flatly rejected. According to him, the company suggested they be allowed to maintain their current high pricing but withhold revenue from being repatriated to their headquarters.

“That offer lacks any logic in my estimation. My goal is simple: Ghanaians must pay a fair price for the services offered. How does their proposal address the real issue?” he stated.

The Minister stressed the need for a new style of public service, one that boldly protects the interests of the Ghanaian people against corporate exploitation.

“For far too long, corporations have fleeced the Ghanaian people. There has been a reset. I remain empathetic to the Ghanaian staff of DStv, but I believe they should stand with the rest of us as we demand what is right,” he added.

Samuel Nartey George reaffirmed his readiness for constructive engagement, but made it clear that price reduction must be at the centre of any future discussions.

“Anything else is tangential and of no consequence,” he concluded.
