Blue Water Guards Fear for Their Lives Amid Galamsey Attacks

A violent confrontation has erupted at the Wassa Amenfi East Municipal Assembly between two rival factions reportedly aligned with the area’s Member of Parliament and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE). The dispute is said to have arisen from the Minerals Commission’s attempts to investigate allegations of brutality against river guards by MCE Raymond Nana Ebbah and illegal miners (galamseyers).

The Blue Water Guards stationed in Wassa Amenfi East, tasked with protecting water bodies from galamsey activities, say they have come under repeated attacks at mining sites allegedly linked to the MCE.

Ms. Agatha, a Blue Water Guard who sustained cutlass wounds while on duty, recounted her ordeal and admitted that she now fears for her life. She warned that she may be forced to resign if urgent measures are not taken to guarantee the safety of the guards.

Meanwhile, MCE Raymond Nana Ebbah has reportedly rejected the government’s appointed coordinator for the DRIP machines, alleging that the appointee is aligned with MP Nicholas Amankwa.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Globe News, Wassa Amenfi East NDC Constituency Chairman, Nana Kofi Atokyi, accused the MCE of failing to act professionally in protecting the river guards, who, he said, are risking their lives to safeguard water bodies.

He further criticized the MCE’s rejection of the government’s appointee as DRIP machines coordinator, questioning his motives and commitment to the anti-galamsey fight.
