Akwatia By-Election Won’t Be a Walkover – NPP Chairman Warns

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Constituency Chairman for Techiman North, Oheneba Appiagyei, has urged the party to tread cautiously in the upcoming Akwatia by-election, warning that the race may be more competitive than expected.

The seat became vacant following the death of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, a development many political observers believe could work in the NPP’s favour by generating what they describe as “sympathy votes.”

However, speaking to Globe TV’s Nana Agyei on Yese No Sen on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, Mr. Appiagyei maintains that the contest remains far from a foregone conclusion, noting that Akwatia is traditionally a swing seat.

“The only way the by-election could be a done deal for the NPP is if the NDC decides not to contest in its full armour,” he said, adding that the party must adopt a well-thought-out strategy to secure victory.

On a lighter note, the Techiman North Chairman suggested it would be “only fair” for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to ease off in Akwatia, in the same spirit as the NPP’s recent decision not to field a candidate in the upcoming Tamale Central by-election.

The NPP says it will not field a candidate in the Tamale Central by-election following the death of MP Alhaji Dr. Murtala Mohammed in the August 6 military helicopter crash.

According to the party, the decision, taken at a National Steering Committee meeting, aims to avoid political tension during national mourning and honour the late MP by focusing on the fight against illegal mining and ensuring a peaceful succession.
