The Eastern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has ordered the immediate demolition of a fire-ravaged one-storey building at the Koforidua Jackson Park traffic light area after a fire destroyed the structure on Saturday night.
The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, issued the directive after visiting the scene and returning with security service commanders and the Municipal Chief Executives of New Juaben North and South.
The directive follows concerns that the severely damaged structure could pose a public safety risk, with the top floor completely collapsing and sections of the ground floor also giving way.
The fire started at about 11 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2026, although the cause remains unclear.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service, a 10-member crew was dispatched after receiving a distress call at 11:02 p.m. and arrived at the scene at 11:15 p.m. Firefighters brought the blaze under control at 1:23 a.m. on Sunday and completely extinguished it at 3:04 a.m., preventing it from spreading to adjoining properties.
The building housed the Kwaku Showboy Boutique, Mama Pee Collection and several residential units.
Personal care products, electrical cables, jewellery, paints, drinks, air conditioners, mobile phones and accessories, clothing and footwear were among the items destroyed in the fire.
Residents who spoke to Channel One TV appealed to the government to provide the Ghana National Fire Service in Koforidua with functioning fire tenders and other resources, saying inadequate equipment is hampering efforts to respond effectively to emergencies.
The residents said some people who witnessed the fire had to travel by motorbike to the Metro station around the B-Foster traffic area to alert firefighters after making several calls for assistance.
