The Minority Caucus in Parliament has urged the government to prioritise the completion of ongoing works on the Accra–Kumasi Highway following a fatal accident at the Birimso Bridge that has reportedly claimed at least 15 lives.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, and signed by the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Roads and Transport Committee, Hon. Kennedy Nyarko Osei, the Caucus expressed deep sorrow over the multi-vehicle collision and extended condolences to the families of the deceased while wishing injured victims a speedy recovery.
The Minority described the incident as another painful reminder of the persistent safety challenges along one of Ghana’s busiest transport corridors, warning that recurring fatal crashes on the highway cannot continue to be treated as unavoidable.
The Caucus called on the government to urgently complete outstanding sections of the highway, including ongoing bypass projects and other improvement works, to enhance road safety and save lives.
It noted that while government has committed US$1.7 billion towards the proposed Accra–Kumasi Expressway Project, an estimated US$300 million could be used to complete existing bypasses and unfinished works on the current highway.
The Minority acknowledged the importance of the long-term expressway project but argued that immediate attention must be given to improving the existing road network to address current safety concerns.
It stressed that expediting the completion of ongoing works should be treated as a national priority while preparations for the expressway project continue.
