Several basic schools in parts of Kasoa, within the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region, have been temporarily shut down following heavy rainfall that triggered severe flooding across multiple communities.
The prolonged downpour left large areas submerged, disrupting transportation, business operations, and academic activities.
At Kasoa Peacetown and surrounding areas, more than 20 houses and shops were inundated. Residents were forced to abandon their homes and spent the night attempting to drain water from their rooms and business premises.
Many affected residents attributed the recurring flooding to what they describe as a poorly designed and inadequate drainage system. According to them, a drainage project intended to mitigate flooding has instead worsened the situation by failing to effectively channel rainwater.
The flooding also impacted traffic along sections of the Kasoa–Cape Coast Highway, where parts of the road remain waterlogged. Several vehicles were left stranded, while passengers endured long delays as drivers struggled to navigate the flooded stretch.
School authorities in the affected communities have announced the temporary closure of basic schools until conditions improve and it is safe for both pupils and teachers to return. Parents have been advised to keep their children at home due to the ongoing risks posed by the floodwaters.
Residents are calling on the government, the Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly, and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to provide immediate relief to affected families and to implement sustainable drainage solutions to prevent future occurrences.
Although no casualties have been reported, residents remain concerned that further rainfall could worsen the situation if urgent intervention is not undertaken.
Meanwhile the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East Phillis Naa Koryoo and the Municipal Chief Executive Seth Saba Serwornoo- Banini has advise school authourities to close down schools until the situation gets better.
