Ghana’s economy expands 7.7%; services sector leads growth

Latest monthly Indicator of Economic Growth released by the Ghana Statistical Service shows that economic activity in Ghana recorded strong growth in February 2026, with the economy expanding by 7.7% year-on-year.

The data points to sustained momentum across key sectors of the economy, with services emerging as the biggest driver of growth during the period.

The report showed that the services sector expanded by 7.4% and contributed 47.6% of the overall economic growth recorded in February 2026.

Growth within the sector was largely driven by increased activity in the information and communication sub-sector.

Industry also posted a strong performance, growing by 9.6% year-on-year, supported mainly by expansion in mining and quarrying activities. Agriculture recorded a more modest growth of 3.8%, driven by crops and livestock production.

According to the report, Ghana’s Monthly Indicator of Economic Growth index increased to 111.3 in February 2026 from 103.3 recorded in the same period last year, highlighting continued recovery and resilience in economic activity.

Government Statistician, Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu, says the latest figures provide an early indication of improving economic conditions ahead of the country’s quarterly GDP release.

The Ghana Statistical Service explains that the indicator measures changes in economic activity across agriculture, industry and services using monthly data and administrative records, while adjusting for inflation.

The strong growth in services and industry could signal improving business activity and investor confidence, although attention remains on inflation, exchange rate stability and broader global economic conditions in the months ahead.
