Ghana expresses solidarity with Mali, issues security advisory to citizens

The Government of Ghana has expressed deep concern over the escalating security situation in the Sahel region, particularly following recent coordinated terrorist attacks in Mali that have claimed several lives, including that of the country’s Defence Minister.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on April 27, 2026, Ghana condemned the attacks, which occurred on April 25 and targeted multiple military positions, including locations in the capital, Bamako. The attacks also resulted in the deaths of military personnel and civilians.

Government extended its condolences to the people and authorities of Mali, describing the incident as a tragic development, and wished those injured a speedy recovery.

The statement stressed that violent extremism has no place in the world and called for strengthened collective efforts to combat terrorism.

Meanwhile, Ghanaian nationals living in Mali have been advised to exercise caution, limit non-essential movements, and maintain regular contact with the Ghana Embassy in Bamako.

Additionally, Ghanaian traders and drivers operating along the Ghana-Mali trade route have been urged to suspend their activities temporarily until the situation stabilises.

Government assured that it is working closely with Malian authorities and will provide updates to facilitate the safe resumption of trade and movement.

It further reaffirmed Ghana’s solidarity with Mali and assured citizens that their safety and well-being remain a top priority.
