Parliament marks the 60th anniversary of the overthrown of Nkrumah’s government

As Ghana marks the 60th anniversary of the overthrown of first president of the Republic of Ghana Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, parliament has called citizens to recommit to the ideals of self-reliance and Pan-African unity.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on February 24, a day that also mark an end of the Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s administration, the Minister of Land and Natural Resources Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah said ” let’s this 60th anniversary mark a turning point, let us as one people finally agree on the important and indispensable role of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in founding our country”. He added that” let’s recommit to the ideals self-reliance, Pan-African unity and the industrial transformation that Kwame Nkrumah so tirelessly championed”.

In a similar vein, the Member of Parliament for Damongo, Samuel Abu Jinapor, commended Ghana’s first President for his unwavering contribution to the nation’s independence. However, he cautioned that ” when we discuss Dr. Nkrumah it should not be looked through the lens of partisanship”.

On February 24, 1966, Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, was overthrown in a military and police coup d’état while on a peace mission to Vietnam. The National Liberation Council (NLC), led by Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka and others, seized power, bringing the First Republic to an end amid concerns over economic challenges, rising foreign debt, and political repression.
