Mahama Calms Public Concerns Over Proposed Utility Tariff Hike

President John Dramani Mahama has moved to allay public concerns over the proposed increases in utility tariffs, emphasizing that the figures put forward by service providers are not final.

He clarified that the proposals submitted to the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) are merely requests from the utility companies and do not amount to automatic approvals.

The President’s remarks come amid growing opposition from sections of the public to the proposed tariff hikes by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) – 280%, Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) – 227%, and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) – 171%.

Many citizens argue that the current economic challenges make such adjustments untenable, and have called on government to intensify the fight against illegal mining, which continues to drive up GWCL’s operational costs due to the pollution of water bodies.

However, speaking to journalists on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, President Mahama assured that the PURC will independently scrutinize the proposals and take into account the economic realities facing households before making any final decision.
