Civil society group Election Watch Ghana has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to postpone the upcoming Akwantia by-election, originally scheduled for September 2, 2025, following the death of eight citizens, including Dr. Omane Boamah, Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a statement released on Monday, the group cited “constitutional and humanitarian grounds” for the appeal, noting that the loss of Dr. Boamah, described as a “key member of the NDC’s electoral team and an active contributor to the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC)”, has significantly impacted the party’s readiness for the poll.

Quoting Article 296 of the 1992 Constitution, Election Watch Ghana stressed that the EC is mandated to exercise its discretionary powers “in a fair and just manner.” The group also referenced Section 13 of the Elections Act, 2002 (Act 651), which empowers the Commission to adjust electoral timelines when circumstances warrant such action.
“A brief postponement would not only be a fitting tribute to Dr. Omane Boamah’s legacy but also an opportunity to reinforce the principles of fairness, impartiality, and equal opportunities that underpin our electoral process,” the statement said.
Election Watch Ghana has formally requested an emergency IPAC meeting to discuss the proposal, adding that granting the request would help create a level playing field for all contesting parties.
“Our democracy, just like the Constitution, is a living organism that grows and evolves through our decisions and actions,” the group concluded.
The EC has yet to respond to the request.
