Gov’t Gives DSTV Ultimatum to Reduce Subscription Fees or Face Licence Suspension – Sam George

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has issued a firm ultimatum to DSTV, warning that the broadcaster’s licence will be suspended by Wednesday, August 7 if it fails to reduce its subscription fees in Ghana in line with regulatory expectations.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Friday, August 1, Mr. George revealed that he has formally directed the National Communications Authority (NCA) to begin the process of suspending DSTV’s licence should the company continue to ignore calls to review its pricing structure.

“I have directed the NCA to act swiftly. If by the 7th of August DSTV has not complied, their broadcasting licence will be suspended,” he stated.

The Minister’s directive comes in response to a recent letter from DSTV, in which the company attributed its current pricing to macroeconomic factors, including what it claims is a more than 200% depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi over the past eight years.

Mr. George, however, dismissed the explanation as unsatisfactory, insisting that Ghanaian consumers have borne unjustifiably high subscription costs for far too long.

“My fidelity lies with the Ghanaian people. They have been cheated for years, and it is time we put an end to that,” he said, emphasizing that government will not tolerate foreign service providers exploiting local consumers under the pretext of economic challenges.
