President Mahama Announces 11 New Farmer Service Centres to Drive Agricultural Modernisation

President John Dramani Mahama has announced the rollout of 11 new Farmer Service Centres as part of a broader national initiative to modernise agriculture and enhance access for smallholder farmers across Ghana.

Speaking at the National Agribusiness Dialogue on Monday, July 28, 2025, under the theme “Resetting Agribusiness for Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Growth,” the President said the centres are a key component of the government’s Big Push agenda, aimed at boosting agribusiness productivity and supporting Ghana’s 24-hour economy through targeted investments in mechanisation and industrial policy.

He revealed that the Ministry of Finance has approved funding for the first phase of the project, which will see 11 out of an initial 50 centres established in key farming zones across the country.

“These tractors and equipment will not be sold to farmers,” President Mahama clarified. “They will be stationed at strategic farmer service centres to provide mechanisation support. What farmers really need is not to own tractors and combine harvesters, but access to the services they provide.”

The centres will house essential agricultural machinery such as tractors and harvesting equipment, which farmers can access by registering at their nearest centre. This model is designed to eliminate the financial burden of ownership while ensuring timely and efficient support during the farming season. Specialised agencies with the technical capacity to maintain and operate the equipment will manage the centres.

In addition to mechanisation, President Mahama also pledged to promote Made-in-Ghana goods through public procurement strategies aimed at stimulating local production.

Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming the agribusiness sector through inclusive, sustainable industrialisation. She highlighted the importance of 24-hour operations in agro-processing, logistics, storage, and distribution, noting that such a system would reduce post-harvest losses, improve efficiency, and enhance value addition year-round.
