Interior Minister Assures Swift Action Against Ablekuma North Election Violence

In the wake of recent violent clashes during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun, Ghana’s Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has pledged firm action to ensure that those involved are brought to justice.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series held at the Jubilee House on Monday, July 14, the Minister assured the public that video evidence of the incidents had already been handed over to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for immediate investigation. He confirmed his direct communication with the IGP, urging swift and impartial enforcement of the law.

“We won’t shield anyone — whether they are affiliated with our party or not,” the Minister emphasized, adding that the Ministry remains committed to upholding national peace and security.

He also cited the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act, 2019 (Act 999), as a key legal instrument to curb political violence and warned against any recurrence of such actions, which he described as a stain on the country’s democratic credentials.

Hon. Muntaka expressed regret that Ghana, after over 30 years of practicing democracy, still faces electoral violence. However, he praised top government officials, including the Vice President, for publicly condemning the violence — a sign, he said, of growing political maturity.

On the assault of a journalist during the election, the Minister confirmed that the police officer involved had been identified and would be dealt with according to the law.

He concluded with a call for collective responsibility in promoting peace, urging citizens to rise above political, religious, and social divisions in safeguarding the country’s stability.
